BEW Course Overview

These workshops run for 3 hours (4 hours when attending the community languages sessions), with a refreshment break built in. They’re intended to build on each other, and therefore run together consecutively, except for week 5, which can be accessed as a standalone on its own, as the focus of this session is on transition.

Please see below for a brief description of what we will cover over the weeks.

If you have any questions or queries, you can contact us at:  BeEmpowered@birmingham.gov.uk

Week 1

Week 1 is information driven, “Understanding this new world”, where we give you a lot of information, and this can feel a bit overwhelming for some, but when you trust the process and see how each week leads into the next you will understand why we do it the way that we do.

Week 2

Week 2 starts introducing the concept of “Partnership Working”, and what this can look like and how we can be the catalyst to change the outcomes even in the relationships that we currently have with professionals (whether these are negative or positive), but also to helps us to understand that we need to be proactive too and not just expect things to be done for us.

Week 3

Week 3 is all about “My child beyond the disability”, the opportunity to really celebrate our child/ren or young person and what makes them unique, it also helps us to reconnect with them as individuals and fall back in love with them as the person they are.

Week 4

Week 4 turns the mirror on us parents (or the main caregiver), “Making life ordinary for us”, what is it that makes us happy as an individual, what would we like to do just for ourselves, and how we can make that a reality by making definitive plans and taking steps to achieve those goals.

Week 5

Week 5 talks about the things that as parent carers we really don’t like to think about too much, “Growing up, Moving on”, which can be about the transitions within education, but also life’s transitions, what our children can achieve when we work with them to do things that make them happy, what is available out there already to help them and what we might need to be thinking about and who we might need to be in contact with now for the future.

Week 6

Week 6 reviews all that we have covered, it looks at the transformations that have happened within the 15-18 hours of attending the workshop. This is also where we take your crucial feedback, and then we celebrate with food that we all bring in.
