This guide has been put together for young people who have an Education Health and Care (EHC) Plan to help them support with Post 16 transition.

It includes information about educational settings in Birmingham and explains how young people can express a preference for the placements that they may wish to attend.

Whether you are considering a placement at a mainstream college or sixth form, at a specialist placement or at a work (vocational) based placement, you can find further information within our schools and colleges information section.

We have also created a user-friendly document called ‘Next Steps’ to help young people through this process.

Young people from Year 10 onwards will have been given advice on the type of placements that may be suitable, through discussions with their current placement at their annual review meeting.

Students should complete the following steps in order to be considered for a placement at a particular setting:

  • Arrange a visit with the setting where possible; while this is optional, it will help you make an informed decision as to whether to apply there
  • Apply directly to the setting you wish to attend.  Each setting has its own process and form – please contact them for more information on how to apply
  • Include the setting on your SENAR Post 16 preference form – this will enable us to consult with the setting on your behalf with regard to your special educational needs.  The preference forms will be sent to your current setting for you to complete

Students should also ask for support from the Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) and Careers Adviser at their current placement. This will help them to make an informed decision about their future placement and to express the most appropriate preferences.
