Maximising the Practice of Teaching Assistants (MPTA)
Who is it for?
1.5-day training for TAs/SLT (Please note there is an expectation that a minium of 2 x TA’s along with the SENCo/member of SLT attend these sessions)
1 x school based session for teachers (staff meeting)
Overview
This training is designed to equip TAs with the skills and strategies to enhance pupils’ learning through effective scaffolding, resulting in more confident, independent learners in the classroom.
It is based on the book ‘The Teaching Assistant’s Guide to Effective Interaction: How to Maximise Your Practice’ By Paula Bosanquet, Julie Radford and Rob Webster.
Aims of the course:
- Boost TA confidence and pupil outcomes
- Promote pupil independence using the scaffolding framework
- Strengthen collaboration between teachers and TAs
- Align with best practices and research-based methods from University College London (UCL)
Thursday 4th November 2026 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and Friday 20th November 9.00 – 12.30 pm 2026
plus staff meeting date to be arranged with school

Cost: This course is offered free of charge to Birmingham Schools
