Birmingham Area SEND Inspection

The 6 Areas of Improvement

We are pleased that the recent SEND Birmingham partnership inspection recognises the progress made and that we are moving in the right direction. However, we are not complacent, and we know there is still much more to do. We are fully committed to addressing the six areas identified in the inspection report and are working together across the partnership to drive further improvements for children, young people and families.

1
The local area partnership should continue to improve the quality and consistency of education, health and care (EHC) plans to ensure that they reflect up-to-date views from children and young people and their families, along with information from education, social care and health services.
2
The local area partnership should ensure that there are effective systems in place to further support improved partnership working at a strategic level.
3
Partnership leaders should reduce waiting times for neurodevelopmental assessment and diagnosis across all ages and also for the diagnosis of learning disabilities. They should also ensure that children, young people and their families have access to suitable support while they are waiting.
4
Partnership leaders should take action to reduce the amount of time that children, young people and families wait to access specialist equipment and for home adaptations to be made.
5
The local area partnership should ensure better oversight and use of the dynamic support registers (DSR) to help prevent children and young people’s needs escalating.
6
Partnership leaders should ensure that children, young people, their families and professionals are clear about the services available through the improvement and promotion of the local offer. This should include highlighting community activities, short breaks and social groups so that children and young people with SEND are increasingly valued and visible across Birmingham.
