Supporting Children with Medical Needs in Settings and Schools

Some children and young people have health conditions which require interventions to be carried out during the day when they are at nursery, school or college. The responsibility for carrying these out is shared between health staff and non-health staff who are in the setting, with the children having healthcare plans in place in their settings, with risk assessments where necessary.

Work is currently underway across Health partners and Education staff to clarify roles and responsibilities and training needs in order to produce local guidance to support the 3 groups as below:

  • Children with medical needs in early years settings
  • Children with medical needs in mainstream schools
  • Children with medical needs in special schools

See the statutory guidance for more information.
