SEND Spotlight: Deaf World

Empowering Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Young People

Deaf World is a young people’s service led by young people. The registered charity is Birmingham-based, supporting deaf and hard-of-hearing young people aged 11 to 25. Their work focuses on building confidence, skills, and independence, while making sure young people are engaged with and involved in decisions that affect their lives, thus influencing Deaf World’s strategy and policy.

What Does Deaf World Do?

At the heart of Deaf World’s approach is empowerment and participation. Young people are actively involved in shaping activities through a dedicated steering group, where they develop leadership, communication, and practical life skills while helping to guide the charity’s work.

Deaf World offers a wide range of inclusive and engaging opportunities. These include a Deaf Zone Youth Club, which promotes physical wellbeing, personal development, confidence, social connection, and a deaf cricket team that competes in a hearing competitive league, helping young people to challenge barriers, build teamwork skills, and feel part of the wider sporting community.

The charity also delivers regular road safety projects, enabling young people to learn to drive, supported by Advanced Driving Instructors and BSL interpreters, developing independence and a pathway to employment. In addition, Deaf World hosts a safe and supportive space for young women to share their views, influence services, and connect with peers.

By working closely with families, schools, and partner organisations, Deaf World creates opportunities that support positive outcomes, smoother transitions into adulthood, and stronger voices for deaf and hard-of-hearing young people across Birmingham.
