THE SEND LIVED EXPERIENCE SURVEY 2026/27
We want to hear about the experiences of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and their parent carers.
The SEND Lived Experience Surveys give you the opportunity to share your views on the support and services you receive in Birmingham. There are no right or wrong answers, and we welcome all feedback. Your experiences will help us to understand what is working well, identify areas for improvement, and shape future support and services for children and young people with SEND in the city.
Each survey should take around five minutes to complete.
Thank you for taking the time to share your views. Your feedback is important to us.
Surveys close on Sunday 31st January 2027. Please submit your response before the deadline.
CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE SURVEY
This survey is for children and young people who receive SEND Support or have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
We want to hear about your experiences of the support and services you receive. Whether your experiences have been positive, negative, or a mixture of both, your feedback will help us make services better for children and young people with SEND in Birmingham.
PARENT CARER SURVEY
This survey is for parent carers of children and young people who:
- receive SEND Support;
- have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP); or
- are awaiting the outcome of an EHCP assessment.
We want to hear about your experiences of services and support for your child or young person. Your feedback will help us understand what is working well and where improvements may be needed across SEND services in Birmingham.
Please complete the survey for one child or young person only. If you have more than one child or young person with SEND, please complete a separate survey for each child or young person.
HOW WE USE YOUR FEEDBACK
Feedback from these surveys helps us better understand the experiences of children, young people and families. It is used alongside other engagement and co-production activity to identify strengths, address challenges and inform priorities for improving SEND services across Birmingham.

WHAT IS SEND?
SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. It describes children and young people who need extra support to learn, develop, or take part in everyday activities because of a difficulty or disability.
SEND Support – SEND Support is the additional help a child or young person receives in their school, college, or early years setting to meet their special educational needs, without requiring an EHCP. It aims to remove barriers to learning and help them make good progress and achieve positive outcomes.
Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) – An EHCP is a legally binding plan that sets out a child or young person’s needs, the support they must receive, and the outcomes everyone is working towards.
